Question:
My husband is pretty handy around the house and he thinks he can remodel our master bathroom himself. Is that a job we should be attempting ourselves?
Answer:
For the do-it-yourselfer,
unless it's a simple fixture replacement leaving most of the existing features of the bathroom in place, I would not recommend taking on such a task yourself. The cost of the mental hospital alone will far exceed the savings of
doing it yourself.
Seriously, some jobs are better left to the professionals. Would you consider taking apart the engine on your car if you weren't a mechanic? Sure you can change the oil and air filter, but leave the
rest to a mechanic right? But you say those remodeling shows on TV make remodeling projects look like a snap? That is true, but what people forget is that the hosts of those shows are professional remodelers with plenty of help
behind the scenes.
In actuality, there are hundreds of factors to consider before remodeling any room in your house. The details involved are too numerous to mention in this column. A simple error of a fraction of an
inch can send a custom cabinet or plumbing fixture to the junk heap Oops, there go your savings, not to mention the wrath of your spouse. The advantage the professional remodeler has is that it is his job to know details and to
see problems coming before they happen. He has done many projects similar to yours in the past, and has the experience to get the job done right. If you need to replace a toilet, sink and light fixture you may want to try it
yourself if you are handy. Anything beyond that, leave it to the professionals. And remember, check out your Contractor thoroughly!
